For melee on horseback, you want either a couchable lance or swing polearm like a glaive. Swinging is much better for overall damage output but some people just like the satisfaction of hitting with a couched lance. Custom weapons with specific parts will let you do both. 2H weapons can work on horseback but you need them to be very long. The glaive is a tiny bit longer, but that's not enough to make up the difference in swing speed. You can just kill more enemies faster with more swings while you charge down the enemy archer line. They won't usually spawn until you are higher clan tier and level. Don't expect to find them early game. The Volge is even rarer and more expensive but it is worth the effort. Its one of the strongest cutting polearms in the game while the billhook is only mediocre.Typically you can get a few extra points in cut damage and swing speed by making the glaive head and shaft as short as possible. Depending on the shaft (I think Reinforced Pine Shaft is the one) you can get all 4 uses - spear brace, couch lance, 1H, and 2H. However, it's minimum length is like 200+, so swing speed is an issue. Rhomphaia, voulge, long glaive, glaive... they're all roughly equivalent. They'll all one hit kill just about anything when you're on horseback, and one hit kill a couple of things with the slice through mod.
